Why Go

Tucked into a preserved century-old West Indian cottage on Back Street in South Hill, Irie Life has been Anguilla's feel-good boutique since 1998 — the kind of shop where you wander in for a T-shirt and leave with a hand-painted tank, a Jams World sundress, and a swimsuit that actually fits.

The Experience

The word 'irie' is Jamaican patois for that highest, easiest state of good — and the four island founders (Agatha, Lynne, Pam and Ulynis) built the boutique around that feeling. The cottage itself is part of the charm: shuttered windows, breezy verandah, and views out over the South Hill ridge. Inside it's a burst of color — racks of Caribbean cotton, walls of jewelry, stacks of totes, and a swimwear room that takes its job seriously. Staff are famously warm without being pushy; browsing here feels more like poking around a friend's closet than shopping a resort store.

What to Try

Swimwear is the sleeper hit — tankinis, bikinis, one-pieces and men's boardshorts curated with the philosophy that if you leave without something that fits beautifully, they've failed you. Look for Jams World (Hawaii-made, hard to find stateside), the West Indies Wear cotton line, and Hiho from the BVI. Don't skip the hand-painted originals: custom tanks and small art pieces with full-moon and Africa motifs that are genuinely one-of-a-kind. Round it out with a Jamaican-made tote, Bob Marley pieces for the kids, and Caribbean spices or gourmet treats for edible souvenirs.

Insider Tip

Ask a staffer to walk you through the swimwear room — they'll pull styles by body type rather than trend, and it's the fastest way to find a suit you'll actually wear all week. If you love a hand-painted tank, buy it that visit; the originals don't restock, and repeat visitors will tell you about the one that got away.

The Practical Stuff

Location: Back Street, South Hill (a short drive up from Sandy Ground). A second outpost sits in Sandy Ground itself, handy after the beach. Hours: Mon–Fri 9:30am–5:30pm, Sat 10am–5pm, Sun 10am–3pm. Phone: (264) 497-6526. Cash and cards accepted; pack a tote or a beach bag as you'll likely leave with more than you came for. AC inside — a welcome break from a hot afternoon.
