Why Go
Ask ten Caribbean regulars to name their favorite beach and Shoal Bay East will land on nearly every list — a two-mile arc of impossibly soft sand fringed by water so vividly turquoise it looks color-corrected. It's regularly voted one of the Caribbean's best, yet somehow still feels like your own private discovery.
The Experience
You arrive expecting pretty. What you get is theatrical. The sand is almost powdery underfoot, faintly blush-pink in the morning light, and the reef just offshore keeps the water glassy calm — more infinity pool than ocean. Walk the full stretch and you'll find your own rhythm: quiet, near-empty pockets on the western end where the sand meets sea-grape shade, and a livelier scene toward the eastern end where beach bars pipe out reggae and grilled snapper smoke drifts across the loungers. Snorkelers drift over coral heads a short swim from shore, spotting parrotfish and the occasional ray. Sunset here is a slow, uncrowded affair — locals wander down with a rum punch, and nobody's in any hurry to leave.
What to Try
Rent a chair-and-umbrella set from Ray (the beach's long-standing vendor — no booking needed, cash appreciated) and post up for the day. Bring or rent snorkel gear and swim out to the reef on the east end for Anguilla's best in-water action. Order a rum punch and grilled crayfish at Uncle Ernie's — a Sunday afternoon institution with live music. For a quieter lunch, try Elodia's Beach Bar or Tropical Sunset, both open roughly 10am–5pm daily.
Insider Tip
The beach has two personalities, and knowing which end you want changes everything. Head west (toward Zemi Beach House and Tropical Sunset) for the more idyllic, low-key half — softer crowds, better shade, honeymoon energy. Go east toward Uncle Ernie's if you want music, cold beers, and a little Sunday-session buzz. Arrive before 10am on cruise-ship days to claim your patch of the quiet end.
The Practical Stuff
Free public beach — no entry fee, and the parking lot is free and generously sized. About a 20-minute drive from The Valley or the ferry terminal at Blowing Point; taxis run roughly US$22–28 one way. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and cash for vendors (some don't take cards). Chair-and-umbrella rentals run around US$20 for a set. Facilities are limited to what the beach bars offer, so use the restroom before you settle in for the day. Best months are December–April for classic Caribbean weather; September–October can bring rain and occasional storm activity.
